Your bankroll doesn't buy time. It buys spins.
Two games with identical RTP can feel nothing alike — one drips, the other does nothing for an hour and then explodes. That difference decides how much you should be betting, and almost nobody does the arithmetic.
RTP tells you the wrong thing
Last week we spent the whole issue on RTP, so it's only fair to say what it doesn't cover. RTP is a long-run average. It says what a game gives back across millions of spins. It says nothing whatsoever about what happens in your next hundred.
The thing that governs that is volatility. Two games can both sit at 96.5% and distribute it completely differently:
- Low volatility pays most of it back through the base game, in small frequent amounts. Your balance drifts down slowly with regular little recoveries.
- High volatility holds most of it back for the bonus round. The base game is designed to bleed. Essentially all the money is in a feature you might not see.
Which means: on a high-volatility slot, you are not really playing the game on screen. You are paying an entry fee, spin by spin, for a chance at the feature. So the only question that matters is whether you can afford enough spins to get there.
What "enough spins" actually means
Say a feature triggers roughly once every 200 spins. That's typical for a modern high-volatility slot, though it varies by title — check the game's info screen, and treat this as the shape of the thing rather than a number for any specific game.
"Once every 200" does not mean you get one every 200. It means each spin is an independent 1-in-200 shot, which produces long empty stretches far more often than people expect:

None of those runs is a broken game or a "cold" machine. They're what a 1-in-200 event looks like. The game is not due, it does not remember, and it is not aware you've been patient.
So pick the bet size, not the game
Here's the part that's genuinely actionable. Take a fixed £50 or $50 to play with, and look at what each bet size buys you:

Same $50, same game, same RTP. Dropping from $1.00 to $0.10 a spin takes your chance of actually reaching the feature from roughly one in five to better than nine in ten. Nothing about the game changed. Only the arithmetic.
The percentages are the chance of seeing at least one feature within the spins your bankroll funds outright. In practice you'll get somewhat more spins than that, because base-game wins recycle back in — which helps, and doesn't change the ordering.
The trade is real and worth stating plainly: smaller spins mean smaller wins if the feature does land. If you want a shot at a big number, you have to bet big, and accept you'll usually run out first. What you shouldn't do is bet big and expect to get there — that's paying for the expensive ticket and the low odds at the same time.
If your bankroll only funds 50 spins on a high-volatility game, you're not really playing that game. You're paying its base-game tax and leaving before the part you came for. On that budget, a low-volatility title gives you a genuinely better session.
